CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape is a COVID-19 epicentre but now the concern is growing about infections in rural areas nearby.
The Winelands have recorded a drastic spike in cases.
Witzenberg, a district of the Cape Winelands has the most coronavirus infections outside the metro.
The number currently stands at 100.
Western Cape Health authorities visited farms in the area.
“Here it started in the prison, we’ve seen cases in the supermarkets, in some of the private hospitals and in the agri-processing factories and on small farms. so it is similar to how the epidemic mirrors itself in the Western Cape," said Western Cape Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo.
The region is an agricultural hub.
Six people have tested positive at a warehouse.
Manager Johan Grobler says the company has implemented extra measures to ensure the safety of all its staff.
Some farms like Paardekloof have their own nurses to regularly screen farmworkers.
With infections rapidly spreading, one of the major concerns is the return of seasonal farmworkers to their homes in the Eastern Cape, and then back to work in the Western Cape in August and that is when COVID-19 infections are predicted to peak in this province.
