CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance's Dan Plato has been elected as Cape Town mayor.
His election comes after chaos in the Cape Town council, which saw former mayor Patricia de Lille resign.
A number of councillors followed suit.
Plato previously held the mayoral chain between 2009 and 2011.
Earlier, the ANC in the City of Cape Town said anything is possible ahead of a council vote for a new mayor, given all the divisions in the Democratic Alliance caucus.
ANC's leader in council Xolani Sotashe says the DA shouldn't be confident.
“We are taking a principled decision as the ANC that Dan Plato never contested any election and he never won any decision,” said Sotashe.
Sotashe has labeled Plato as a puppet and a mayoral candidate of DA federal chairperson James Selfe and DA federal council deputy chairperson Natasha Mazzone.
