CAPE TOWN - Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille is briefing the media.
She officially resigned as Cape Town mayor and as a member of the Democratic Alliance.
In August, the DA dropped misconduct charges against De Lille in exchange for her to step down.
On Tuesday, City of Cape Town speaker Dirk Smit formally laid criminal charges against De Lille.
The party says it made the resolution, based on a report by law firm Bowman Gilfillan.
The 2,000-page report details how De Lille's conduct systematically broke down good governance in the City of Cape Town.
De Lille has taken to Twitter, insisting she has not resigned.
She says the letter was her earlier resignation letter to party leader Mmusi Maimane and not her formal resignation.
