WATCH: Driver detained after Metro Police find cigarettes

JOHANNESBURG - A man has been detained in the Western Cape after Metro Police found contraband cigarettes during a roadblock.

The Cape Town Metro Police pulled the vehicle over and the occupants failed to produce a permit.

Police then conducted a full search and found sweets, chips and some groceries.

COVID-19: No new deaths recorded in SA as infections climb

Upon further inspection, police discovered contraband cigarettes with the assistance of K9 unit.

The sale of cigarettes and alcohol has been prohibited as the country deals with the spread of COVID-19.

Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa extended the lockdown by a further two weeks.
