JOHANNESBURG - They have days where they can’t get out of bed, when their memory fails them or anxiety is overwhelming.

These are COVID-19's 'long-haulers.' 

They are patients who have recovered but are now living with various neurological or behavioural side-effects.

Studies conducted in Europe and the USA have found some patients who’ve been hospitalised may develop neurological or cognitive problems.

Tygerberg HospitalGeneral Internal Medicine Head Dr. Neshaad Schrueder says there are neuro-cognitive specialists in South Africa looking to study the virus’ long-term effects on the brain. 

Right now though, amid a third wave, the main focus is on patients in distress in hospital.
