South Africa is a water scarce country that is prone to droughts and about two-thirds of the country is arid or semi-arid.

CAPE TOWN - South Africa is a water scarce country that is prone to droughts and about two-thirds of the country is arid or semi-arid. 

Most parts of the Northern Cape, the Free State, North West and Limpopo provinces are among the arid areas in South Africa.

Rainfall in these areas is largely marginal and these areas are most affected during drought years.   

WATCH: A water disaster in the making

The country suffered devastating droughts in recent years.  

2017 saw the worst drought in a century in the Western Cape. It was a nervous time for Capetonians but Day Zero was averted by a hair's breadth.
