JOHANNESBURG - Former Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Athol Trollip says former Western Cape premier Helen Zille’s time in politics is over.

Trollip and the former DA leader are running for the party’s Federal Council chair position, with two other candidates.

“I believe that we have some deficiencies in our party, especially around message, discipline and party discipline as a whole. I have been in this for many many years and I have never let the party down, never turned my back on and I believe that that kind of loyalty and discipline is strongly needed right now,” Trollip said.

Trollip said he represents the future of the party.

“There’s a time to come and time to go in politics and I think Helen has had both of those,” he said.

Zille announced her candidacy last week, saying the DA is in trouble and needs stability.
