Will Nene be fired?

JOHANNESBURG - Some opposition parties want Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene gone.

Business Day newspaper reported that Nene reportedly asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to fire him.

Nene apparently made the request over the weekend and it's now up to the president to make the decision.

The minister is facing pressure from opposition parties to resign over his testimony at the state capture inquiry, where he admitted to several meetings with the Guptas.

On Friday, Nene apologised for meeting the Guptas at their home and businesses, and for not disclosing the meetings at the time.

In an interview with eNCA a few years ago, Nene denied ever meeting the Guptas formally.

According to Business Day, Nene's request will be tabled during an ANC meeting on Monday.

The party's top six held a lekgotla this weekend.

They've agreed to dedicate more time to build unity and renewal in the organisation.
