Winter initiation season cancelled

The National Executive Committee of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa has unanimously resolved to cancel the 2020 winter initiation season. Contralesa's Secretary-General, Zolani Mkiva, spoke to eNCA anchor Dan Moyane.

JOHANNESBURG - The National Executive Committee of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa has unanimously resolved to cancel the 2020 winter initiation season.

This is the first-ever cancellation.

"Given the outbreak of the coronavirus, we were compelled to consider the cancellation of the winter season," said Contralesa secretary-general Zolani Mkiva.

Mkiva said they had "extensive consultation processes" with all the cultural communities that practice the ritual.

"We had to make sure that all the components of the institution of traditional leadership are brought on board in terms of getting their views on this matter," he said. 

He said the cancellation of the winter initiation season is an unprecedented decision.

"The virus is a silent enemy and we felt that in the great interest of the children and the boys we then had to prioritise their lives and ensure we don't take a risk that could have dire consequences."​

The National House of Traditional Leaders recently announced that the initiation season would be suspended.

“These are desperate times and they call for desperate measures, they call for hard decisions,” said Inkosi Sipho Mahlangu of the National House of Traditional Leaders.
