DURBAN - The Zululand District Municipality is accused of spending R5-million on a business breakfast.
The meeting took place last week at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban.
It appears the council did not approve the budget for the event, which is now being probed by the provincial government.
Mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi has hailed the gathering as a success and stated the provincial MEC Sipho Hlomuka is lying about the cost.
He said, "these allegations are totally baseless. They are a figment of the MEC's imagination."
"We had an overwhelmingly successful business breakfast where we only spent an amount of R137,000 to host this investment seminar and we secured R600-million worth of investment in tourism and water infrastructure, which we unveiled on the day."
Buthelezi said the MEC is pursuing a political agenda.
