ANC NEC meeting expected to be a showdown: analyst

PRETORIA - Political analyst Ongama Mtimka says there will be a showdown at the ANC NEC meeting this weekend.

The party's highest decision-making body is expected to provide clarity on the issue of criminally-accused party members stepping aside from their positions.

Mtimka said, "there are push and pull factors here. Camps within the ANC, especially that align to President Cyril Ramaphosa want to take action against Ace (Magashule) in ways that seriously weaken him and make him a political nonentity in the campaign of President Cyril Ramaphosa to get a second term."

"On the other hand, the camp that supports Ace Magashule wants to limit President Cyril Ramaphosa to one term as such. They are going to oppose any attempt which they may see to not just be about rules but weakening themselves as a political group within the ANC."
