JOHANNESBURG - The government needs a different approach in the fight against COVID-19.

This is according to Professor Mark Tomlinson from Stellenbosch University.

COVID-19 in SA: Death toll could be higher than reported

"We have to be targetted in the messaging. When people trust their political leaders they are more likely to listen.

"When the messages are contradictory or seemingly irrational, people lose trust. We need to err on the side of cooperation," Tomlinson said.

South Africa has recorded more than 276,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Gauteng, which will soon breach 100,000 confirmed cases, has almost half of the active cases in the country.
