Even though he calls himself a “boerseun,” Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen is quick to admit that he preferred being in the kitchen as opposed to riding the farm tractor. For a young boy, growing up on a farm in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, it was a bold move – in a time when men plus cooking didn’t equal chef! Today, Jan owns the title of being the first South Africa to have earned a Michelin star – his restaurant, Jan, opened it’s doors in Nice, France and …. well .. let’s just say … innovation is his secret ingredient … that … and a will to thrive …. even in the Kalahari!
