Chris Hani remembered 23 years after his assassination

Chris Hani was the leader of the SACP and chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the ANC. Hanis assassination in 1993 shook the anti-apartheid movement to its core.

JOHANNESBURG – Today marks 23 years since the assassination of SACP leader Chris Hani.

The ANC and the SACP, will gather at the Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park in Ekurhuleni to commemorate Hani&39;s life.

Communist Party Secretary General Blade Nzimande and his ANC counterpart Gwede Mantashe, are among the leaders who will speak at the wreath laying ceremony.

Parole for Chris Hani&39;s assassin, Janusz Walu? was ordered by the High Court last month. 

This caused public ourcry and has prompted Minister of Justice and Correctional Services to appeal the order.

He believes parole is not in line with the processes in place for granting parole, in which the healing of victims is considered key.
