UMLAZI - There was overnight looting of foreign-owned shops in Umlazi in Kwazulu-Natal after a 24-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead by a foreign shop-owner on Thursday.
Kwazulu-Natal SAPS communications officer Thulani Zwane said, "Ayanda Dlamini was allegedly shot by a foreign shop owner at approximately 11:44am (on Thursday) at J-section in Umlazi."
"The shop owner alleges that his shop was being robbed by four suspects (Dlamini not being one of them) and he shot at them in self-defense. He claims he shot Dlamini accidentally."
Dlamini was transported to hospital and later died.
The shop owner was arrested.
Zwane said, "Following this incident, there was more looting reported in Umlazi areas as the community was angry about what had happened.
Zwane said police had been deployed to the area and were monitoring the situation.
No arrests have been made.
Kwazulu-Natal police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni is to issue a statement on this issue on Friday afternoon.
