DURBAN - An ANC councilor in Pongola in Northern KwaZulu-Natal has dropped a bombshell at the inquiry into political violence in KZN.

Nqaba Mkhwanazi says he has evidence of about 4,000 fraudulent party memberships in the Zululand region.

He believes the fake memberships are linked to the party's Youth League and saysa he has reported the matter to Luthuli House and the police.

The cards apparently have fake stamps.

The revelation comes just three months ahead of the governing party’s elective conference.

Each branch sends a delegation to the conference. The number of delegates depends on the size of the branch, so fake membership cards are seen as an attempt to boost numbers at branch level and, ultimately, to influence the outcome of the vote.

Cyril Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma are considered front-runners for the ANC's top job.
