JOHANNESBURG – A fire that broke out on Friday morning at the Rynfield substation has left parts of Benoni without electricity.
City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the fire was caused by a transformer that exploded.
"The fire has been put out and emergency personnel are clearing the smoke. The equipment is also being cooled down. The transformer that exploded will be replaced," Gadebe said.
Four mini substations at Rynfield and Crystal Park were also affected.
Gadebe could not confirm when the power would be restored.
Earlier Gadebe confirmed the fire.
"We can confirm that a fire broke out at the Rynfield substation this morning. Our engineers are working hard to determine the cause of the fire and will advise when the power will be restored," said Gadebe.
Gadebe said affected areas include Northmead, Ebotse, Crystal Park, Morehill, Putfontein, Brentwood Park, Fairleads, Benoni Agricultural Holdings and parts of Daveyton.
