CAPE TOWN - More than 85 firefighters are currently battling a blaze in the Cape Winelands.

As of 2pm on Wednesday afternoon, the fire was burning out of control.

Eight fire trucks were on the scene and about 90 volunteers were out helping firefighters.

Officials say about 1,000 hectares of land had burnt so far.

The mountain catchment area is mostly made up of fynbos.

No buildings or homes have been damaged and none are in any danger yet while some vineyards have also been scorched and more are in danger of being destroyed.

Dale Norkje, spokesperson for the area, said that, with the wind picking up and temperature rising, the fire is spreading fast out of control.
