JOHANNESBURG - Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is the winner of the 2016 Sunday Times Business Leader award.

South Africa's business elite met in Johannesburg on Tuesday night for the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies Awards at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Along with releasing a list of the country's top companies, the Sunday Times also paid tribute to Remgro chairperson, Johan Rupert -- one of the richest men on the continent -- who received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 2015, both the Lifetime Achievement and Business leader of the Year awards were scooped by billionaire businessman, Dr Christo Wiese.

Former President Thabo Mbeki was the key-note speaker this year. This was his first public appearance since his letter to President Jacob Zuma.
