Johannesburg - Alexandra was painted blue as DA members gathered in the township north of Johannesburg on Monday, to commemorate the June 17, 1976 riots.
Democratic Alliance supporters gathered in an open veld near the Jukskei River singing struggle songs.
"We&39;ve voted for the ANC, it did not work for us," the crowd sang.
DA Parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko laid a wreath at the grave of Japie Vilankulu, the first Alexandra youth to die during the Alexandra Riot in 1976. The riot was a spillover from the June 16, 1976 Soweto uprising.
Mazibuko was expected to address the crowd.
