JOHANNESBURG – No decision has been made on the switch from analogue to digital television, Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe said on Thursday.
This comes after reports that Communications Minister Faith Muthambi allegedly defied cabinet by recommending set-top boxes, without conditional access.
In 2013, the ANC lekgotla called for set-top boxes to be manufactured with conditional access.
This control mechanism would allow broadcasters to encrypt their signals.
Set-top boxes are needed to decode digital signals for analogue televisions, and the government planned to subsidise these for millions of poorer households.
But arguments over whether the set-top boxes should have control mechanisms appear to be delaying the switch-over.
