Drive to root out illegal schools, botched circumcisions

Johannesburg, 2 June 2016 - Traditional leaders are blaming parents for the high number of deaths during the initiation season. They saysome are intentionally taking their boys to illegal initiation schools. Last year over 100 initiates died.

JOHANNESBURG - Authorities are calling on parents to be careful about where they send their children to be initiated, as the initiation season gets under way.

Last year, more than 100 initiates died due to botched circumcisions.

Forty boys lost their lives in the Eastern Cape alone.

In the past decade, the practice has also resulted in more than 1,000 penile amputations.

Government says it wants zero fatalities this year, but admits the law is inadequate in dealing with wrongdoers.

Police will work with the national initiation task team to carry out compliance spot-checks at initiation schools.
