Driver charged with attempted murder in M1 shootout

JOHANNESBURG - The driver of a vehicle involved in a shootout with police on the M1 highway in Johannesburg has been charged with attempted murder.

A manhunt has been launched for his passenger.

The incident started at the Bosman Road Taxi Rank in Pretoria on Tuesday morning.

Police noticed a commotion around a taxi -- a VW Transporter --  and when officers approached the vehicle, the driver sped away.

By the time it reached the M1 highway towards Johannesburg, the SAPS helicopter and other SAPS and Metro Police units had been alerted to join the chase.

Police say shots were fired from the vehicle, and officers responded with gunfire.

When the taxi was finally run off the road on the M1 south near the Joe Slovo offramp in Killarney, two suspects were found inside.

The driver had been shot in the leg -- he was taken to hospital under police guard.

The passenger, who is believed to have been the one firing at police, fled the scene on foot and is still at large.
