JOHANNESBURG – The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department EMPD internal affairs is investigating two police officers, one of whom appears to be assaulting a woman at an intersection in Germiston.

A video of a police officer smacking the woman has emerged on social media. The woman appears to be telling the metro cop to voetsek during an altercation and the officer retaliates by smacking her across the face several times.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said two assault cases were opened at the Primrose police station in Germiston [one by the officer and the other by the woman who appears to be assaulted on the video.]

“The officer claims a woman attacked her first before the video was captured… she opened a case of assault and the woman laid a counter charge in the same police station, the following day,” Kgasago explained.

He said according to officers, the altercation began when woman refused to give them [police] her details during a street enforcement, a course of patrolling the street where officers are on the watch for unsafe driving which often is associated as causes of traffic collisions.

“The officers have taken leave but our internal affairs department is investigating the matter…I cannot confirm to you when the officers will be back on duty,” said Kgasago.
