JOHANNESBURG – We have all heard the adage about history repeating itself.

Nearly 50 years ago, students took to the streets in Germany, calling for a free society for all.

Some historians and academics are now comparing those protests with South Africa&39;s Fees Must Fall movement. eNCA reporter Nickolaus Bauer takes a look back in time at the parallels between the two protests.

"There is a new political landscape that is evolving and that’s exactly what happened in Germany in 1968 as well. If the lessons of the past are not learned, we see things which might be ugly and problematic and they might resemble things which have happened in the past,” said Professor Antje Schuhmann, Wits University Centre for Diversity Studies.
