JOHANNESBURG – Dr Gwen Ramokgopa has been sworn in as the new Gauteng Health MEC.

Ramokgopa replaces Qedani Mahlangu after she resigned last week, a day before the report into the Life Esidimeni deaths was released.

Health Ombudsman Professor Malegapuru Makgoba found that 94 mentally-ill patients died after being transferred to various unregistered NGOs.

Ramokgopa was formerly a health MEC and a deputy health minister.
