KZN minibus that killed 19 was faulty

JOHANNESBURG – KwaZulu-Natal traffic officials say the minibus that crashed into a bridge barrier in Msunduzi Valley was faulty.

Nineteen people died and seven others were injured.

The crash happened just outside Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.

Paramedics said when they arrived on the scene fifteen bodies were lying around the vehicle.

Investigations are under way and officials have confirmed the minibus was overloaded.

The driver has been taken to hospital under police guard.

Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi has sent condolences to the families of the deceased.

“We received a report that the driver failed to apply his breaks which lead to this horrific accident......breaks were not in good condition,” said KZN Transport MEC, Mxolisi Kaunda.
