PLATINUM SUPPLY DEFICIT WIDENS

NORTH WEST  -  Lonmin is looking to cut some 3 500 jobs at its South African mines.

It is blaming the tough economic environment, and a dip in platinum prices.

The company is hoping to achieve its goal through voluntary exits, saying forced cuts are a last resort.

Lonmin also says it is holding discussions with unions as well as workers.

The mining company has around 37 000 employees including contractors.
