CAPE TOWN – A man has been arrested for allegedly raping a five year-old girl in Cape Town.

The incident reportedly happened on Sunday night in the Mitchell's Plain area.

The City of Cape Town says police officers were on duty in the area when they were alerted by members of the public to the rape of a little girl.

The suspect had already fled the area but was then arrested after the little girl identified where he lived in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain.

Upon arrest, the man was found in possession of an illegal firearm.

The victim has been taken to hospital.
