Friends and family of a murdered lesbian are shocked that the man accused of killing her is known to them.
Duduzile Zozo’s loved ones came face-to-face with her suspected assailant, 22-year-old Lesley Lekgoa Motleleng, in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Police suspect the openly gay Thokoza woman was targeted because of her sexual orientation.
Her body was found not far from her home. She had been sexually assaulted with a toilet brush.
Zozo’s mother didn't suspect one of her daughter's friends could be responsible for her death, but she is grateful that after three months police have finally arrested a suspect.
“My heart feels so painful because it seems as if I’ve got enemies in Thokoza which I didn’t know," said Osma Thuziwe, Zozo's mother.
“As family and neighbours, we are relieved. Our children weren't safe while this man was still out there.”
However, Zozo’s friend, Bianca Laban says Motleleng confessed to the murder months ago but that police failed to take her claims seriously when she reported it.
Motleleng will remain in police custody until his next court appearance in December.
