JOHANNESBURG - Former President Thabo Mbeki has appealed to President Jacob Zuma to listen to ANC stalwarts who have expressed their concerns about his leadership.

In an open letter, Mbeki urges Zuma to take the advice of the veterans who he says are eminently senior to most members of the party's current National Executive Committee.

He adds that the veterans have 'advanced extremely serious observations about the current situation" and that ANC leaders must engage the 101 veterans 'with all due seriousness'.

The ANC veterans, who include former secretary general Cheryl Carolus and Frank Chikane, have publicly criticised Zuma and thrown their weight behind Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.
