JOHANNESBURG – A mentally ill man was killed in a mob justice attack after he killed two people in Etwatwa, in the east of Johannesburg, on Saturday.

"At around 6pm, a man got into an argument with a 55-year-old woman and started hitting her with a spade. The woman was taken to hospital but she died last night at a hospital in Alberton," said Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

When members of the community chased the 35-year-old suspect to make a citizen&39;s arrest, he attacked another person with the spade, also killing the victim.

"The community then assaulted the suspect until he died. There have been no arrests and police are investigating," Dlamini said.

Police opened three cases of murder.

The Etwatwa community has been plagued by violence that led to the death of three boys who were allegedly linked to a gang.
