MiWay dismisses racist email as fake news

File: An email, allegedly from a MiWay assessor, states a managerial decision was taken to reject 90% of black people's claims from 1 August 2017 as they are "easy targets" and "baboons."

JOHANNESBURG - Insurance company MiWay has dismissed as fake news, an email posted on social media which calls black people easy targets and baboons.

In the so-called email, a claims assessor apparently writes that a managerial decision was taken to reject 90% of black people's claims from 1 August 2017.

MiWay CEO René Otto dismissed the incident as fake news, saying an investigation showed that the email was never sent from a MiWay employee.

"There was also no such meeting that took place or decision to this effect. We are tracing the source of this fake content on social media and will take strong and appropriate action against anyone using our brand to disseminate offensive and derogatory comments,” he said.
