National Health Insurance plan closer to implementation

Pretoria - Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has confirmed that there are still no cases of Ebola in the country.

PARLIAMENT - The National Health Insurance (NHI) plan is moving closer to being implemented.

Briefing the Portfolio Committee on Health in Parliament today, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said the final draft is ready to be submitted to cabinet.

Motsoaledi said the first five-year pilot phase of the NHI, which involved improving the quality of services, is coming to an end.

The next phase is building infrastructure.

Government plans on building over 200 clinics in the 11 pilot districts over the next five years.

The National Department of Health has direct control of this project to ensure accountability.

Motsoaledi said the NHI will only work if there&39;s good leadership.

Motsoaledi said, "Director generals are chosen by the president.  HoD&39;s in provinces are chosen by Premiers.  That is the weakness of our system.

"If on the top there, you don’t (have good) leadership and governance, you have failed. The rest is going to collapse like a pack of cards.”
