CAPE TOWN - Statistician-General Pali Lehohla says South Africans should dispel the notion of free education.

He says nothing is for free and the country needs to find out how to tax it.

Lehohla was releasing the financial stats of tertiary institutions for 2015.

Calls for a national shutdown have been growing, with disturbing scenes being played out on campuses in recent weeks.

Lehohla says nearly one million students were enrolled in 2015.

He says the total income for all tertiary institutions is R63-billion.
