JOHANNESBURG, 27 August 2016 KwaZulu-Natal officials say the controversial election of municipal officials in the Nquthu Municipality was illegal.
DURBAN - Efforts to correct Nquthu Municipality's leader vacuum have been dealt another blow.
A meeting that took place on Tuesday was the sixth failed attempt to secure a council sitting.
The municipality was placed under administration in October, after several failed bids to elect new office bearers. Now the absence of a leader has affected Umzinyathi district council, stalling the process to reconstitute that municipality.
Government was seriously concerns about the safety of Nquthu council members.
“As we were on our way there (to the meeting) there were issues of security concerns. And we were advised by the security institutions to actually not proceed with the meeting because you know there were serious issues of concern related to security. And of course as a department, we had to heed that,” said the province's cooperative governance spokesperson Lennox Mabaso.
