File: Parliaments Finance Committee is expected to hold its first round of public hearings into governments proposed sugar tax.
CAPE TOWN - The controversial proposed sugar tax will be discussed on Tuesday.
Parliament’s Finance Committee is expected to hold its first round of public hearings on the matter.
During his budget speech last year, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced a sugar tax would be levied in April 2017.
It's part of the state's efforts to curb the high obesity rate.
The health sector has welcomed the idea, saying it will be a step in the right direction for South Africa.
But lobby groups object, saying it will add further pressure to an industry already suffering the effects of drought.
