Update: Rape cop denied bail

JOHANNESBURG - A Johannesburg policeman accused of raping a 13-year-old girl has been denied bail.

The officer appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrate&39;s Court on Tuesday.

He was arrested in Kliprivier, south of Johannesburg, last week.

The off-duty policeman -- stationed at Ennerdale -- allegedly abducted and raped the teen last week.

According to the teenager&39;s grandmother, she and her cousin were walking along a pathway when a man driving an Opel Corsa cornered them.

They said he used pepper spray on them before forcing the blinded girl into his car.

He then parked in a ditch in Kliprivier where he allegedly raped her.

Two passing policemen grew suspicious when they spotted the vehicle in the ditch.

They stopped to investigate, and caught the policeman in the act.

“I want to see justice take its course because I won’t have the money or know where to go for help. I believe it’s not the first time he&39;s done this. I want the public to back me in court,” the grandmother said.

The girl’s grandmother has pleaded for public support to ensure justice is served.

Scores of people showed support for the victim by protesting outside court during the proceedings.
