Protests on N1 south of Joburg

JOHANNESBURG - Protesters disrupted traffic on the N1 near the Grasmere Toll Plaza, south of Johannesburg, during peak hour on Thursday morning.

Rocks were placed on the highway, vehicles were stoned.

Police spokesman Kay Makhubele said it was not yet clear why people were protesting but it was alleged they were dissatisfied with housing and service delivery.

"The protest is spreading around the Orange Farm, Ennerdale, Grasmere and Lenasia South areas  ... there were people stoning cars and we are appealing with motorists to avoid those routes."
