South Africa's Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane poses in her office after a press briefing releasing reports on various investigations on June 19, 2017 in Pretoria.
JOHANNESBURG - The Public Protector on Wednesday said the Reserve Bank is personally attacking her.
The bank accused Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane of misleading the court.
Both parties are in the North Gauteng High Court over Mkhwebane’s report into an apartheid-era loan to Bankorp.
The Public Protector is also accused of breaching the Constitution by telling Parliament to change the Reserve Bank’s mandate.
This is really important! The fact that the PublicProtector @PublicProtector met with the @PresidencyZA weeks before filing her report on apartheid-era loan to Bankorp and did not disclose two meetings and record transcripts of them is proving a critical to the case CIEXReport— Erin Bates (@ermbates) December 5, 2017
Mkhwebane’s lawyer argued the Reserve Bank was trying to remove her.
“What the Reserve Bank is clearly after is not just simply an attack on the integrity of the Public Protector, which we say is unwarranted,” lawyer Paul Kennedy said.
“The court should not be part of any such game or strategy or approach.”
