JOHANNESBURG - A drug bust in Booysens, south of Johannesburg, has led the Hawks to seize heroin worth about R48-million.

Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramoloko told eNCA that police arrested a 42-year-old Pakistani man, who was found with 40-kilograms of the narcotic.

"The bust was a result of work done by crime intelligence," said Ramaloko.

Police also seized two unlicensed firearms.

Ramoloko said that a kilogram of heroin is worth an estimated R1,2-million. He added that the heroin contained a cocktail mixture of Nyaope, a drug that contains ingredients such as rat poison and antiretrovirals.

Ramoloko said police would investigate to determine whether the suspect was part of a syndicate.
