BARBERTON - Monday marks two years since three mineworkers were trapped underground at Lily Mine in Mpumalanga.

Operations to recover the bodies of Yvonne Mnisi, Pretty Nkambule and Solomon Nyerende stalled in 2016.

Authorities said at the time that it was unsafe for rescuers to continue.

A shaft collapsed, trapping 87 miners below the surface.

Most of them were rescued.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union will host a remembrance day outside the mine in Barberton.

The union is calling for the resumption of recovery operations.
