PORT ELIZABETH - A Port Elizabeth court found ANC councillor Andile Lungisa guilty of assault with the intent to cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH).

He was remanded in custody.

Lungisa faced charges over the assault of DA councillor Rano Kayser.

Lungisa allegedly smashed a glass jug over Kayser's head.

He denied the claim, saying he was acting in self-defence as he felt threatened by DA members.

The state argued his claim did not hold water after cellphone footage presented in court showed DA members moving away from him.

The state also labelled his testimony evasive and riddled with inconsistencies and contradictions.

The incident took place in October 2016.
