A video has gone viral showing a male pupil at what is believed to be a Kwazulu-Natal school attacking a fellow female pupil.
JOHANNESBURG - KwaZulu-Natal education officials have identified the school at which a girl was brutally assaulted as the Siyathuthuka High School in Inanda.
A video of the incident has caused outrage on social media.
The department wasn't immediately able to establish at which school the attack took place and appealed for help doing so.
Officials were to visit the high school on Friday morning.
Basic Education Department spokesperson Troy Martens said the video was disturbing.
"The level of violence that was displayed is quite horrific, to say the least.
"So we would advise that the learner who was the victim lay criminal charges.
"We can't commit to what happens until there's disciplinary action, but from what we can see, it does appear to be a very serious offence and we condemn it in the strongest possible terms.
"We would like to see expulsion possibly and criminal charges. This type of behaviour cannot be tolerated in our school," Martens said
