EKURHULENI - More than 200 illegal miners are reported to be trapped underground in Benoni, east of Johannesburg.

ER24 has reported that some of those are trapped towards the top of the old shaft and the rest down a steep tunnel.

In a statement released on the ER24 Blog website, spokesperson Werner Vermaak reported that emergency rescue services were waiting for mine rescue services to assist them.

"At this stage we are not sure how many miners are injured. Once they are freed medical workers will start to assess them and proved treatment where necessary," he reported in the online statement.
