File: Four miners have died in an underground fire in a platinum mine on Friday.

RUSTENBURG – Rescue teams were digging deeper into the ground in a bid to find trapped Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats) miner Ohemile Moses Maamogwa, the company said on Thursday.

“We are clearing more area and getting much deeper into the fall of ground, but unfortunately we have not been able to locate him yet,” said spokesperson Johan Theron.

Maamogwa, 55, a rock drill operator, was trapped underground following a rock fall at Implats’ 1 Shaft in Meriting near Rustenburg on May 17.

He was trapped with fellow rock drill operator Tanki Samuel Lepitikoe, 40. Seven others mineworkers escaped the rock fall unharmed.

Lepitikoe’s body was found and he has since been laid to rest in Maseru, Lesotho.

Mining operations at Implats’ 1 Shaft have been suspended as the search for Maamogwa continues.
