Three of the five awaiting trial prisoners from the Kgosi Mampuru Prison who escaped on Wednesday have been apprehended and are back in custody.

The men were set to stand trial in the Themba Magistrates Court in Pretoria for various serious crimes, but managed to escape from the vehicle they were being transported in.

Police say they're unsure of how the men cut the bars of the police van to make their breakaway.

"The awaiting trial prisoners escaped from a truck which was going to Themba Magistrate’s Court. Apparently they escaped in the Hammanskraal area they cut the two burglar bars at the back and escaped. Three of the prisoners were on trial for rape and two were appearing for armed robbery,” Gauteng SAPS Spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said.
