DA's Solly Msimanga is mayor of Tshwane

JOHANNESBURG   -- Solly Msimanga is now officially the mayor of Tshwane Municipality.

 

 

The Democratic Alliance councilor was the only nominee and was declared the executive mayor on Friday to a roaring applause from the DA and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members in the council.

As the two parties celebrated, African National Congress (ANC) councillors started singing party songs.

Following the August 3 local government elections, the DA  secured 93 seats in the metro, the ANC 89 seats while the EFF has 25 seats.

The DA&39;s Rachel Mathebe was elected Speaker of the council after also being the only nominee for the position.

As Msimanga attempted to deliver his inaugural speech, he was interrupted by hecklers.
