Soweto, Johannesburg - Scores of people on Sunday took to the streets of Soweto, south of Johannesburg, on Sunday to commemorate Youth Day and remember the class of 1976.
Led by Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, the Youth Day Memorial Walk started at Naledi High School, winding its way past Morris Isaacson High School and ended at ended at Orlando Stadium.
The peaceful walk was meant to celebrate and acknowledge the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976 who protested against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction.
"This is an emotional movement. We relive the march of June 16, 1976 accompanied by those who were there just to say the journey thus far has not been an easy one," said Mokonyane.
