SOWETO - Tension is rising between foreign nationals and residents of Doornkop in Soweto, after a 15-year-old was shot and killed while looting a shop on January 19.
A group of teenagers allegedly robbed a spaza shop owned by a Pakistani national. During the robbery, the shop owner fired shots and killed one of the boys.
In response, the community vandalised the shop and looted several foreign-owned shops throughout the night.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said two men have been arrested for possession of stolen items and public violence.
“The situation is calm, but tense. Several shop owners are being escorted out of the area. Police visibility has increased and we will remain here until everything has settled,” said Makhubela.
The shop owner who allegedly shot the teenager was arrested on January 19.
He faces a charge of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear at the Protea Magistrate’s Court soon.
